Longrow Society 11yo Refill Re-charred Sherry Butts...

Longrow Society 11yo Refill Re-charred Sherry Butts (56.9%): Taking a break from reviewing brandies and returning to the world of whisky... Last night we ended up uncorking another Springbank Society bottling. It is an 11yo Longrow distilled in November 2007 and bottled in March 2019 and aged in refill re-charred sherry butts. The small batch yielded 2250 bottles in total at cask strength.

Color: Light amber, yellow gold color with oily, very slow and thick legs.

Nose: Plastic squeeze bottles, bruised raspberries and hibiscus tea. Pebbles, wet wool and moldy basement smell. Bunsen burner and rubber garden hose. It noses like a Port finish whisky actually`... Red currants, black cherry soda and four fruits jam. After adding a few drops of water peat gets a little more stage time: Clear plastic tarps, bonfire on the beach and wet sand. Sour cherry juice, candle wax and just a hint of sulphur.

Palate: The bonfire on the beach theme continues on the palate: Consumed charcoal, hot ashes and grilled banana peppers. Brown bits in the skillet, warm honey and dried apricots. A few drops of water add sweeter notes such as cream puffs and raspberry jam. Lightly roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate, pipe tobacco and vintage Port.

Finish: Long with hot paprika, black pepper, dry soot and thickened honey. Old buckskin shirts...

Overall: It's simply delicious... It is juicy, fruity and peppery with red fruits, sweet dairy notes, grilled peppers and tobacco. It's mouthwatering and also incredibly easy to drink even at cask strength. I also want to say that I really love the plastic notes of Longrow in general both on the nose and palate... Only other distillery I get similar notes from is Bowmore. Again it is a great bottling from the Society with a hard to believe price tag. I know that this bottle won't last nearly long enough in this household...
