Doctor Bird Moscatel Cask Finish (50.0%): This rum is a blend of Jamaican pot still distilled rums imported and blended by Detroit based Two James Spirits and finished in Moscatel barriques. I ran into this bottle while I was looking for an alternative to my beloved Smith & Cross in the same price range and decided to give it a try. Not because I wanted to change Smith & Cross just wanted to try something new...
Color: Very pale yellow, pinot grigio like with thin but slow moving legs.
Nose: Full blast Jamaican funk... Gasoline, latex gloves and exhaust gas. Skillet burn, gunpowder, dark syrupy molasses and caramel. Followed by passion fruit, papaya and mangos. It is funky, dirty and thick. Loving it so far...
Palate: A thinner mouthfeel than I expected. Cigar end, rubber tube and burnt caramel. Candied papaya pieces, crystallized ginger and tree bark. Grilled pineapple, gunpowder and grilled green banana peppers.
Finish: Medium with lemon zest, orange and passion fruit.
Overall: Score..!!! I am hooked... After I was done with the tasting I immediately mixed a dark 'n' stormy for myself and it was delicious... Now I am curious about the other spirits Two James Spirits is bottling. This is a great rum for funk lovers at a very reasonable price. Well done guys..!
