Old Forester Kentucky Straight Rye...

Old Forester Kentucky Straight Rye (50.0%): A new addition to Old Forester line-up... It is a 100 proof straight rye whiskey distilled from a pretty interesting mash bill of 65% rye, 20% malted barley and 10% corn. We will see how big of a difference it will make to swap corn for malted barley as the secondary grain in the mash bill. Let's pour some right away. Oh, screw cap. Nice...

Color: Clear medium amber with very thin but permanent legs, almost like beer lacing.

Nose: Stainless steel flask, hyacinths and soap bars. Body moisturizer and lemon juice. Fresh coriander leaves, lavender and Amaro Meletti.

Palate: Eucalyptus and rose water. Edible flowers, cinnamon and fresh rosemary leaves. Apple compote, cloves, fennel seeds and toasted oak.

Finish: Medium long with leather, dill pickles and Yellow Chartreuse.

Overall: Having malted barley as the secondary grain indeed makes a huge difference. A lot of floral and soapy notes both on the nose and on the palate to balance the spicy, herbal and green notes of the rye instead of the dusty and sweet caramel popcorn notes of corn. I see absolutely no harm jumping on the same bandwagon with everyone else: Stunning whiskey for the price I paid for. One of the best values on the shelves... I think I will have a bottle in my cabinet all the time from now on. Highly recommended...
