Old Particular Isle of Jura 12yo...

Old Particular Isle of Jura 12yo (59.4%): Finding a single cask Jura from an independent bottler is a pretty rare occasion on its own, let alone bottled at cask strength... There was no way in the world I could pass this up when I saw it hitting the shelves at K&L Wine Merchants. It is distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2018 by Douglas Laing exclusively for K&L from a refill sherry butt which yielded 577 bottles.

Color: Oaked Chardonnay, bright yellow with long and fast legs.

Nose: Cask aged genever, bicycle inner tubes and slices of sourdough bread. Lemon scented dishwashing liquid and canned air dusters. Ok, bear with me for a second... It is a very interesting nose. I'll give it a few more minutes to air and see if it helps: Wet malt, kiwi fruits and basil leaves. Very vegetal and grainy with unripe stone fruits. After adding water: Damp and moldy cellar, bread yeast and distiller's beer. New make spirit and lambic beer...

Palate: Wow... It also tastes like a genever: Sage, rosemary and juniper berries. Malty, herbal and yeasty... It is an odd, unbalanced and actually an off-putting whisky but I it is also kinda fun at the same time. Water calms it down just a touch: Salted butter, anise seeds, parsley flakes and dill.

Finish: Medium long mostly with salt, green herbs and white pepper.

Overall: What an odd whisky it is... Most of the people I know would absolutely hate this whisky the moment they nose it but I do know also a few characters who would appreciate the oddity and quirkiness of it. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea not even close enough but it has the potential to be a fun conversation starter in the right place at the right time. It certainly would make any blind tastings very very amusing...
