Two different McDowell's No.1's "Luxury" and "Platinum"...

Continuing with the world's top three selling whisky brands... Today is day 2 and the brand is McDowell's No.1. Owned by United Spirits/Diageo McDowell's No.1 sold 25.5 million cases in 2016 securing the title of second best selling whisky in the world. * I do have two different botllings on my desk though... I will take a wild guess and assume that "Platinum" has a higher rank than "Luxury" in the line-up just because it comes in a glass bottle not in a plastic one like "Luxury". So let's start with "Luxury"... McDowell's No.1 Luxury (42.8%): Color: Yellow gold with again thin but slow moving legs. Nose: Sweet with touch of smoke... That's surprising, isn't it? But soon enough alcohol rises up in the glass and kinda kills all our hopes about the nose. Now the smoke is purely medicinal but in a good way: First aid closet, hydrogen peroxide and gauze pads. Palate: Industrial alcohol with hints of ins...

I cannot believe it's been a year... Raif Karasu (1931 - 2010)

Laberdolive Domaine de Jaurrey 1995...

Gascony has a long history of cooperage and producing wine going all the way back to Roman times but only around 17th century the Dutch brought and encouraged the idea of distilling wine. Throughout their search to find the most suitable grape varieties and best wood for the production they ended up in Armagnac province. Today the area is divided into three regions: Bas Armagnac, Tenareze and Haut Armagnac. Traditionally armagnac is distilled only once in copper alembics using continuous distillation method but nowadays some estates are also double-distilling their wine using pot stills. After the distillation the condensed spirit is pumped to black Gascon oak barrels and aged in warehouses. The cellar master decides which barrels to keep longer for special vintage releases and which barrels to empty earlier for blending purposes. Common and affordable expressions in the market are usually blends and they have a specific terminology on their labels indic...

Compass Box Great King Street Glasgow Blend (revisited)...

Compass Box Great King Street Glasgow Blend (43.0%): After almost six years and dozens of empty bottles I think it's time to revisit one of my all time favorite blended whiskies if not the one. Glasgow Blend was released as a permanent addition to Great King Street line-up in 2014 inspired by Aeneas MacDonald's book "Whisky" published in 1930 where MacDonald talks about how Glaswegians prefer fuller bodied and more flavor-packed whiskies if compared to other whisky drinkers in the world... An inspiration which brought together a pioneer whisky maker currently celebrating his company 's 20th anniversary and a city I am in love with in the very same bottle... The batch I am about to pour carries the number #211 and it is bottled in June 2019... Even though I am aware that every batch might be blended from a slightly different recipe and that there is no way for Compass Box to keep up the downloadable fact sheet on the website up to date but here are some very gee...
