Two different McDowell's No.1's "Luxury" and "Platinum"...

Continuing with the world's top three selling whisky brands... Today is day 2 and the brand is McDowell's No.1. Owned by United Spirits/Diageo McDowell's No.1 sold 25.5 million cases in 2016 securing the title of second best selling whisky in the world. * I do have two different botllings on my desk though... I will take a wild guess and assume that "Platinum" has a higher rank than "Luxury" in the line-up just because it comes in a glass bottle not in a plastic one like "Luxury". So let's start with "Luxury"... McDowell's No.1 Luxury (42.8%): Color: Yellow gold with again thin but slow moving legs. Nose: Sweet with touch of smoke... That's surprising, isn't it? But soon enough alcohol rises up in the glass and kinda kills all our hopes about the nose. Now the smoke is purely medicinal but in a good way: First aid closet, hydrogen peroxide and gauze pads. Palate: Industrial alcohol with hints of ins...

three new whisk(e)y books...

"Discovering Scotland's Distilleries" by Gavin D. Smith and Graeme Wallace Finally a book about distilleries only... I have been looking for a compact guide like that after I came back from my first visit to whisky distilleries in Scotland. Visiting distilleries can be addictive. It is so much fun to plan your next visit in advance, looking for information, scheduling your trip hour by hour, preparing the items in your backpack, etc. and this book is a great help. It is extremely easy to use it's color coded simple maps and different indexes to find the distillery you are looking for. Each distillery page contains very short but useful info about owners, flavor style, visiting schedules, tour pricing and a summary of the distillery's history and it's technical details. Darroze Domaine de la Poste 1980 36yo...

Darroze Domaine de la Poste 1980 36yo (48.3%): Back to the sample yard... Today's pick is a 1980 vintage armagnac from Domaine de La Poste bottled by Darroze . It is distilled 100% from ugni blanc grapes in a continuous still at 55% abv and matured in Gascon oak casks before it got bottled in February 2016 at 36 years of age. Color: Quite light for a spirit which spent 36 years in a cask. Yellow gold with a thin haziness. Fat, oily but fast legs around the glass. Nose: Dried apricots, vanilla and fresh mint. Jonquils, Granny Smith apples and lemon twist. Dusty... Chalky soil orange marmalade and blanched almonds.... Sweet, citrusy and surprisingly fresh nose. Palate: Perfumy... Lightly toasted oak, poached pears and warm almond croissant. Dragon fruit, alcohol soaked prunes and golden raisins. Vanilla and toasted coconut. Refreshing and light in texture but rich with exotic fruits, spearmint leaves and citrus notes. Finish: As long as it gets. A never ending slow fade...

leftovers from winter...

Peak Winter Session Ale (5.0%): Another release from one of my favorite breweries from East Coast, Peak Organic . It is one of their seasonal expressions which uses wheat as its grain. Look: Very dark amber, coppery color but crystal clear with almost no head. Nose: It starts very hoppy but then butter, fresh french baguette and sweet pastry crust aromas are filling in. Polished stainless steel, toasted bagel and lemon meringue pie at the end. Palate: Orange pound cake, lemon cookies, cookie dough, whipped cream and butterscotch. Toasted warm bread crust and unsalted butter like I got a lot from St. Peter's ales with mouth covering creamy sweetness. Just a hint of bitter-sweet middle-eastern spices at the end. Quite a doughy feast... Overall: This is an unusual but very tasty brew. I definitely didn't expect this from an American Ale. From nose to finish it was full of sweet surprises. Single Cask Nation Stones of Stennes 13yo...

Single Cask Nation Stones of Stennes 13yo (57.4%): Today I am tasting a member exclusive bottle from Single Cask Nation released in collaboration with the hugely popular podcast Hello from the Magic Tavern . The whisky in the bottle comes from an undisclosed distillery situated on Orkney Islands which doesn't start with the letter "S". It is distilled in December 2004, aged in a 2nd fill PX sherry hogshead (#76) and bottled in January 2018 at cask strength yielding 294 bottles. Color: Honey, medium amber with thin but very slow legs. Nose: Cranberry juice, dried sour cherries and boiled eggs. I definitely can nose sulphur but not at an alarming level. Zante currants and cooked prunes, lemon juice and salt. Letting it air helps a little. Less sulphury more earthy aromas now... Newly watered black gardening soil and forest mushrooms. Adding water strangely didn't change a lot... Everything above but a little dialed down. Palate: The texture is subli...
